Welcome to the Pipe of Port

Our crusty old Dickensian candle-lit Wine Bar with mahogany tables and sawdust covered floors is one of the most atmospheric venues in town.
All our food is freshly made by ourselves, we use top quality ingredients from some of the best suppliers in the county. In addition to our standard menu we always have a few “specials” and at lunchtime we serve a light lunch/snack menu.

9 September 2008 - A HENSCHKE CELEBRATION
Stephen & Pru Henschke have long established themselves as serious world class winemakers. They are a team. Both have won the prestigious winemaker of the year award. The wine they make is perfectly crafted and so, so subtle. But they pack weight and power. When I taste wines from high quality producers like Stephen & Pru, I rediscover what balance and skill it takes to make wine like they do. I bought only six bottles some time ago when they did a special museum release and put them away. Also I only have two of their wines. The Red is a blend of 60% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Malbec. The Keyneton Estate 1986 (yes, not a typing error). You can now find Keyneton Estate for sale in Waitrose, a more recent vintage of course at £40 a bottle. I dare you to go on the internet to find the price of wine of this provenance. The white is the wonderful Eden Valley Julius Riesling 1995. This is about the oldest Riesling you are likely to taste in a long while. Trust me it is worth it. I will serve you another red and white. The Starter will be a dish of seafood, in luxury cheese sauce and grilled until golden brown. For main course it will be roast beef, 30 minutes out of the oven, rare with a pure roast beef jus from the roasting tray. Some suitable accompaniments to compliment the wines. I feel we ought to end with cheese on this hallowed occasion. Another not to miss, limited numbers I’m afraid. There will only be 4 wines for this event.

The Pipe of Port first opened its doors in 1976 and has been run by sisters Janet & Sue and Sue’s husband Stephen since 1981. One of the guiding philosophies of the family is that in an ever-changing world some things should always remain the same. This ideal is reflected in the décor and general welcoming and homely atmosphere of the Pipe of port. The wine cellars offer a wide range of wines from around the world. We have visited very many of the great wine regions of the world seeking out interesting winemakers with a passion for their craft.
